Vitamin B12 is essential to nerve and cell health. It is not often found in plants or plant-based foods, with the exception of nutritional yeast, mushrooms, and sea veggies (algae). If you are vegan, vegetarian, or plant-based, you WILL need to supplement it. Common B12 deficiencies are fatigue, tingling, poor memory.

Tomorrow's Leaf" (Ashitaba)
Tumblr media
I recently bought seeds of "Tomorrow's Leaf" (Ashitaba) at a home center. 150 yen. This vegetable, which is native to the Izu Islands, grows wild locally. It belongs to the Umbelliferae family, well, it's an Apiaceae, but it is characterized by its exceptionally high content of vitamin B12, which is essential for brain function, along with comfrey among plants. This is a beauty that vegans should cry for joy in. Recommended. It's just a little big.

The only other vitamin [of concern] is vitamin B12. It's not made by plants. It's not made by animals either. It's made by little microbes that blanket the earth. Because of the way we live in our sanitized world, unless you're eating bacteria-contaminated foods, we need to get a source of vitamin B12 from somewhere. So, the healthiest, cheapest, safest source is to get a vitamin B12 fortified food or vitamin B12 supplement — not to get it from meat and dairy...There's no vitamin, mineral, nutrient that you can't get from non-animal sources.

Many people wonder why they feel tired and sluggish all the time. You might be doing everything right—getting plenty of sunlight for vitamin D and eating fruits and vegetables for vitamin C. However, one important nutrient might be missing from your diet: vitamin B12. Torf, you are aware that you are moving the goalposts around here willy-nilly and I would like to say that I have noticed.
Anyways, there are three essential components missing from a diet of rice, beans, and B12 supplements (five or six if we count fat, vitamin C, and calcium, but I will nicely assume that our hypothetical sensible vegan is eating some vegetable oil of some kind, and cilantro or parsley at least, since that’s how a sensible, financed, and non-human-dumpster-fire would round out their diet of rice and beans. Also calcium; there are vegetable sources as I am sure you know, but the Mexicans and Indians, the big rice and legumes cuisines, generally add dairy); money, executive function/shit togetherness, and knowledge that they need to eat rice and beans and get B12 supplements. Might so be trivial for you that you are unaware that leftist circles are filled with people who lack the stability, discipline, good sense, and money to do the rice, beans, B12 diet and so are suffering from nutritional deficiencies, starting with just plain old insufficient calories, because broke mentally ill people can’t actually afford to buy all their calories from Whole Foods and CSAs but they’re dumb enough to try. Stop playing dumb; you have absolutely met these people if you’ve spent twenty minutes in political vegan circles.
“Cultural genocide is good actually, and I will specifically mention some of animal rights’ previous victories over MoC (dog fighting).” Are you actually retarded or is your use of the “politics is the mindkiller” tag supposed to be an admission of being mindkilled on this entire topic?
If you seriously believe that eating meat is motivated purely by “emotional satisfaction” and everyone who says otherwise is just a lying undisciplined meat-addict, there’s no point in continuing to discuss this topic with you, because you’re completely removed from reality, acting at cross purposes to your alleged goals, and frankly unpleasant and offensive on purpose.
Thanks for demonstrating exactly how fucked up your ideology is though.
I believe that we'll eventually solve the meat eating/veganism issue not by cultured meat, which requires highly controlled production environment, but by geneengineering plants that have flesh that is 85-90% like meat in terms of taste, texture and protein content. This is the most plausible scenario because it will be Good Enough for the overwhelming majority of people while annoying the 5-10% of the most insufferable people on either side, therefore it's funny, therefore it will happen.

Note
People that are absolutely convinced anyone can be vegan/vegetarian baffle me. I eat meat fairly regularly and I am already courting a B12 deficiency (for anyone who doesn't know the easiest source of B12 that the human body likes to absorb is red meat, you can get it from other sources primarily leafy greens I believe but your not getting as much because it's not as easy for your body to absorb) my levels aren't low enough to be considered clinically deficient but it's a near thing so my doctor has told me to take 2 B12 vitamins every day. I'm hoping this fixes my levels because if it doesn't that's a sign of a much more serious problem where my digestive system is biologically struggling to absorb B12
Gods, I feel you
When I got my Chron's diagnosis, the gastroenterologist and I talked about diet. High fiber is my enemy. I'm mostly OK now thanks to maintenance medication, but even now I can't have more than a single handful of nuts or popcorn without Suffering after. Raw vegetables are iffy; I can eat a couple of radishes or carrot sticks, but celery sets it off and raw broccoli or cauliflower is misery. I can have ONE small bowl of salad a day, which sucks because I LOVE salad. I have to be careful to limit servings of raw fruit, which also sucks because I adore cherries and pears and peaches.
Cooked vegetables are mostly fine, though I still have to keep the broccoli and brussels sprouts servings small. Cooked fruit is fine too. Beans are iffy. I can have some, but not a lot, which sucks because I love beans. Tofu is OK, but during my flare it gave me worse gas.
During a flare, my safe foods were cheese, meat, eggs, milk, fruit juice, vegetable juice, white bread, and cream of wheat. It was a fucking nightmare to try and get all the nutrients into me that I need. You will note that most of these are in fact animal products. I was under literal medical orders to keep the hell away from non-juiced fruits and vegetables.
Of course, a bunch of people came out of the woodwork to tell me that I could heal myself by cutting out all dairy and wheat and going vegan/raw vegan. People still do this regularly. I've deleted ten out of my inbox since yesterday.
If I tried to go vegan, it would be very, very rough on my traitor-ass large intestine and would probably send me into a flare. If I tried to go RAW vegan, it would probably mean surgery and might kill me.

Femme Fatale Guide: Simple Tips For Healthy Eating & Exercising Habits
As someone who lost 30-40 pounds and has kept it off for over a decade, here are some practical ways to eat better and move more that still allow you to have a life and enjoy your food & workouts.
Tips for Healthy Eating Habits:
Adopt a healthier lifestyle out of self-love and improvement, not self-punishment or hatred
Shift into an abundance mindset: What foods and types of movement can you use to add/enrich your life? Focusing on what you're cutting out will only backfire
Prioritize produce: Find fruits and vegetables you love (a decent variety, around 5-10 options, is a good start)
Focus your meals on plant foods: While you don't need to cut 100% of animal foods out of your diet, making at least half of your plate fruits, vegetables, potatoes, or beans will help fill you up and support your vitamin requirements
Research & experiment until you find a rotation of healthy meals you love: Make your healthy eating routine as mindless and straightforward as possible. Once you find a handful of healthful breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snack options you enjoy, it becomes infinitely easier and more enjoyable to stick to a healthier lifestyle
Cook 80-90% of your meals at home. Know what's in your food. Control the amount of any added oil or sweetener you incorporate into any dish
Decide on at least 2 sweet and 2 savory healthy snack options you can always have on hand to support hunger or a craving throughout the day (mine are fruit bowls, a small bowl of oatmeal [with or without a few almonds], plain popcorn, carrots & hummus, and frozen edamame)
Have fun tea, coffee, and water options available: Always eat if you're truly hungry. But, for the times you're bored or stressed, having a vanilla or cinnamon tea, a cup of cold brew, or a lemon/fruit-infused water can satisfy your desire for some palette simulation
Be mindful of potential vitamin deficiencies: Your hair, skin, digestion, mental health, and energy can easily be on the rocks due to a vitamin deficiency. Get your levels checked to every year or two to ensure you're in optimal health. As a vegan who lives in a seasonal climate, I take B12 and vitamin D daily to keep up with these nutrient requirements
Allow yourself a weekly indulgence and splurge on special occasions. Prioritizing your health, not deprivation, is essential to make your life high-quality and worth living
Tips to Make Exercise More Effortless & Enjoyable:
Create 2-3, 60-120 minute (1-2 hour) playlists with different upbeat, EDM, or dance party vibes: Use these playlists to set the tone for a long walk or a gym workout
Keep a "Workout Bank" on your Youtube favorites list: Curate a handful of 10-30 minute pilates, strength training, or dance sculpting classes to always have an option available
Block your workout or walk into your schedule: Make a meeting on your calendar, set a reminder or an alarm with an upbeat song on your phone. Make a movement date, and prioritize yourself. It's for your health – your most priceless asset
Book a workout class with a friend. If you want to go solo, book it a week in advance, and tell at least 2 other people about your plans. Describe the workout class you're taking in as much detail as you can. Pique the other person's interest to incline them to ask you how it was after the class. This social pressure can make you feel more accountable to follow through with your workout in the end.
Dance around your room for 10-30 minutes in the morning before work, after work before dinner, or as a nightcap. Any movement counts
Practice moderation: Don't try to work out every day. Maybe you can get some steps in or have a solo dance party, but don't try to overdo it and stress out your body. This practice will only lead to quick burnout and no long-term motivation. Sustainable routines win the race

Dear Person who Loves Hating on Veganism,
Not all vegans are white, USian, or wealthy. In fact, those demographics aren't remotely representative of people who practice veganism.
Most vegans aren't obnoxious fucking idiots, and we hate the idiots as much as you. They're just louder, and people see them because they're obnoxious fucking idiots who won't shut the fuck up.
We're very aware of the fact that the agribusiness industry exploits and abuses workers who are disproportionately immigrants and people of color. There's a big overlap between people who are vegan and people who try to buy local produce that we can confirm is made ethically. Unfortunately, this is expensive, and see above point about most vegans not being wealthy.
It's impossible to buy fucking anything these days without it being made by exploited workers. It is possible to avoid buying products that are produced by both worker exploitation and unimaginable cruelty to animals. Harm reduction.
Many of us also try to avoid buying stuff (Palm oil, quinoa, etc) that causes massive ecological harm.
Vegan "replacements" for animal products are not necessary for being vegan.
We know that eating eggs doesn't hurt chickens, that taking wool doesn't hurt sheep, and that eating dairy doesn't hurt the animals it comes from. Those of us who aren't idiots are fine with animal products that come from animals who are well-treated.
The animals that produce eggs, wool, and dairy for mass consumption live in conditions that would be illegal to keep a pet in.
Opinions vary on killing animals for meat if they're otherwise well-treated through their lives.
Eating vegan is straight up cheaper than not as long as you don't insist on buying luxury items to replace every single animal product in your diet.
Plant-based milk is only more expensive than dairy in the USA because of the extent to which the US government subsides the dairy industry.
The amount of meat that USians eat is fucking insane, unhealthy, and ecologically unsustainable. If we enacted laws that required farmers to give their animals the space and care needed for them to be remotely healthy and kept up the current rate of meat and dairy production, something like 70% of the available arable land in the country would be going to animal farming.
Cattle farming is the largest source of methane emissions on the planet. Methane is far more potent as a greenhouse gas than CO2. Reducing cattle farming would have a huge impact on global warming.
Humans are not carnivores. We aren't even omnivores, strictly speaking. We are primarily frugivores with a limited ability to digest animal products.
There is no nutritional benefit you get from animal products that is not available from plant-based food. Often, your body will obtain the nutrients more readily and efficiently from plants than from animal products.
The only exception to this I'm aware of is vitamin B12. This is because this vitamin doesn't come directly from plants, but from the soil they grow in, and most plants are washed too thoroughly and grown in unhealthy soil. Vitamin supplements can easily replace this.
There are innumerable health benefits to plant-based diets, even if you aren't fully vegan.
Most of us have pets. Most of us support caring, sustainable animal husbandry.
Whether or not you are vegan, you should, imo, be aware of the reality of how the animals you consume are treated. What you do with that information is your own business.
We would also like to launch PETA into the fucking sun.
Sincerely,
A Vegan Who Is Fucking Tired of This Bullshit.
